Tech Giant Apple in Talks to Invest in OpenAI

Apple to invest in OpenAI

Apple is reportedly in talks to invest in OpenAI, the leading AI company behind ChatGPT, as it seeks to deepen its involvement in the rapidly growing field of generative AI. With OpenAI aiming for a $100 billion valuation and ongoing partnerships with major tech players like Microsoft, Apple’s potential investment could further enhance its AI capabilities, just as it prepares to launch its latest iPhone models optimized for AI innovations.

Apple, the tech giant known for its revolutionary products like the iPhone, is reportedly in discussions to invest in OpenAI, the leading name in generative artificial intelligence and the creator of ChatGPT.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Apple, co-founded by Steve Jobs, is considering joining a significant funding round for OpenAI, which is raising additional capital to support its advanced technology development.

OpenAI is reportedly aiming for a staggering $100 billion valuation, with the funding round led by Thrive Capital, a prominent venture capital firm that plans to invest $1 billion. For months, there have been ongoing reports that OpenAI has been seeking additional capital, which would solidify its position as one of the most valuable tech companies globally.

Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor and a major partner that receives half of the startup’s profits, is also participating in this latest funding round.

If Apple proceeds with the investment, it would mark a significant expansion into AI technology for the company, which is also preparing to unveil its latest iPhones on September 9, featuring enhancements optimized for AI.

In a related move, Apple announced in June that it would integrate OpenAI’s technology into its high-end iPhones, while also allowing users the option to choose AI tools developed by other companies. Although many AI features on Apple devices are powered by Apple’s own technology, more complex tasks could be handled by OpenAI’s systems if users opt for it.

Apple has yet to respond to a request for comment from AFP.
